But what Zeph remembered most was seeing how they broke his mother, physically and emotionally, again and again, until her light went out. The white-haired boy ended up as a slave in a noble house in the City of Ebony. His forearms, back, and legs bore the permanent memory of the whip, but even when that noble house fell out of glory and ended up in the most dangerous streets of the capital, even when the one who had bought and treated him like an object breathed his last breath, Zephyr tried to help him. Thus, he ended up in the twisted, dark, and rotting depths of Ebon City. In the suburbs, although his mane and skin made him stand out, what stood out most about him were his eyes—deep and expressive, filled with a kindness that was both rare and disarming. He still moved through the streets with a silent grace, his presence like a gentle breath of wind in a stifling room. Unknowingly, life beyond the familiar confines of the Zenith was far from ideal for people like him, and he would encounter challenges and revelations that would transform his understanding of both the world he left behind and the one he longed to explore. And perhaps, it was before leaving the city walls that he learned that those who did evil, whose nature had no room for redemption, had to be corpses with blood roses adorning the last memory the world would have of them. In time, he founded the group known as The Wild Roses, yearning to expand those new horizons. |
